DID YOU KNOW THAT...

    THE 101 ENGINEER BATTALION (THIS UNIT) OF THE
MASSACHUSETTS ARMY NATIONAL GUARD TRACES ITS
LINEAGE BACK TO OCTOBER 7, 1636 WHEN IT WAS THE EAST
REGIMENT OF THE LOCAL MILITIA FROM THE TOWNS OF LYNN,
IPSWICH, AND NEWBURY. THIS MAKES US ONE OF THE
OLDEST MILITARY ORGANIZATIONS IN THE UNITED STATES.

    THE MASSACHUSETTS ARMY NATIONAL GUARD SAW
ACTION IN EVERY CONFLICT INVOLVING THE UNITED STATES
FROM THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR TO BOSNIA.

    THE MASSACHUSETTS ARMY NATIONAL GUARD IS PART
OF THE DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY WHICH ALLOWS THEM TO
BE INTEGRATED INTO THE TOTAL FORCE STRUCTURE OF THE
UNITED STATES ARMY IN MATTERS OF NATIONAL DEFENSE.

    THE MASSACHUSETTS ARMY NATIONAL GUARD IN UNDER
CONTROL OF THE GOVERNOR OF THE COMMONWEALTH AND
CAN BE CALLED OUT IN THE EVENT OF A DOMESTIC
EMERGENCY. THESE ACTIVATIONS INCLUDED THE CHELSEA
FIRE OF 1973, THE BLIZZARD OF 1978, AND THE MOST RECENT
SNOW EMERGENCIES IN THE PAST YEARS.

    UNIT MEMBERS OF THE GUARD ARE REQUIRED TO
ATTEND ONE WEEKEND A MONTH AND 15 DAYS ANNUAL
TRAINING EACH YEAR. THEY ARE PAID AN AVERAGE OF
$200 EACH WEEKEND THEY ATTEND. THIS IS FEDERAL
MONEY WHICH IS PUMPED INTO THE LOCAL ECONOMIES.

    THE MASSACHUSETTS ARMY NATIONAL GUARD HAS A TOTAL FORCE OF 9,700 STATEWIDE IN 55 COMMUNITIES.
